Credit card fraud is an unfortunate reality, but there are effective steps you can take to prevent it and respond quickly if it occurs. If you suspect or confirm a fraudulent transaction, it’s important to record all transaction details and save any CCTV footage from the time of the incident. Notify your bank immediately to ensure they can take swift action to protect your account. Reporting the fraud through official channels, such as cyber.gov.au, is also crucial to address the issue and help prevent further incidents.

To minimize the risk of credit card fraud, always physically inspect cards by checking signatures, expiry dates, and looking for signs of tampering such as ghosting or shading. Make sure the magnet strip isn’t damaged and the holograms appear three-dimensional and move when tilted. Being vigilant about your customers can also help—watch out for those who seem anxious, arrive close to closing time, or appear to be in a rush. Large quantity purchases or requests for manual payment entry can be red flags as well.

If something doesn’t feel right, don’t return the card. Instead, ask for photo identification, call your supervisor, and contact the issuing bank to verify the card’s information. If you’re still suspicious, don’t hesitate to call Triple Zero (000). Completing the transaction before providing goods and asking for the 3 or 4 digit number on the back of the card for phone or internet sales are additional measures to keep in mind.

Taking these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of fraud and ensure a safer environment for both you and your customers. For more tips and detailed information on credit card fraud prevention, be sure to visit police.vic.gov.au/fraud-and-scams.
